Discover how architect-turned-furniture designer Warren Platner created the iconic wire-frame collection that remains a symbol of mid-century modern elegance and engineering innovation.
Warren Platner did not start in furniture. Trained as an architect, he spent years in the office of Eero Saarinen, absorbing a philosophy where buildings, interiors, and furnishings form a seamless whole. That background proved decisive when, in the 1960s, he began experimenting with furniture that felt less like an object and more like an extension of the room. The signature wire-frame concept emerged not from a desire to be novel but from an obsession with structural clarity and visual lightness. Platner wanted a chair that looked as if it were drawn with a single continuous line — a goal that demanded engineering creativity.
“I wanted a chair that would be all wire — no visible joints, no heavy structure. Just the skeleton,” Platner said in a 1966 interview.
Platner collaborated with Knoll to refine his wire-frame idea, resulting in the Platner Collection launched in 1966. The collection debuted at the Milan Furniture Fair, immediately praised for its architectural integrity.
The Platner wire-frame technique required hundreds of vertical steel rods welded to a circular frame. This process created a strong yet airy structure. Platner meticulously designed the chairs and tables to eliminate visible joints, achieving a seamless appearance. The pieces were often finished with nickel or bronze, giving them a distinct metallic glow.
“It took over a year to perfect the welding process. The tolerances had to be exact, or the piece would wobble,” recalls a Knoll engineer from the 1960s.
Today, Platner’s designs are found in high-end residential and commercial spaces worldwide. Designers consistently cite his work as a benchmark for minimalist yet expressive furniture. The collection remains in continuous production under Knoll, a testament to its timeless appeal. Platner’s pieces have been seen in luxury hotels, corporate lobbies, and celebrity homes — proof that functional design can endure for decades.
“Platner’s chairs are the perfect balance of strength and delicacy. They’re sculptures you can sit on,” says interior designer Kelly Wearstler.
Much like the innovative design solutions seen in iconic sports venues, Platner's furniture has proven that functional design can be truly timeless.
