Bethesda's Fallout 5 is likely years away, but rumors hint at New Orleans or Chicago settings, next-gen graphics, and deeper survival mechanics. Here's what we know.
Bethesda Game Studios has not announced Fallout 5, and the studio’s development pipeline suggests a release no earlier than 2028. Starfield launched in 2023, and the next major RPG from Bethesda is The Elder Scrolls VI, which remains in early pre-production. Historical development cycles for Bethesda’s open-world RPGs — typically four to six years between major releases — push Fallout 5 well into the next decade.
“We have a lot of things to do before we get to Fallout 5” — Todd Howard, 2023 interview.
Microsoft’s acquisition of Bethesda in 2021 has added additional considerations. The game will almost certainly be exclusive to Xbox and PC, following the pattern set by Starfield. No official teaser or concept art has been released; all estimates are based on studio pipeline analysis and historical patterns.
Easter eggs in Fallout 76 have fueled speculation about the next wasteland. Mardi Gras masks, references to the Louisiana Purchase, and a cryptic radio broadcast mentioning “the Big Easy” point toward New Orleans. A Louisiana setting would offer unique biomes — from bayous to the French Quarter — and a chance to explore Vault-Tec’s influence in the Deep South.
Chicago is another popular candidate. The city was mentioned in Fallout Tactics and has strong ties to the Enclave and Brotherhood of Steel lore. Job listings from Bethesda have referenced “urban planning” research, which some fans interpret as preparing a dense city environment. Either location would be a departure from the Boston and Washington D.C. settings of recent titles.
“Urban planning experience preferred” — Bethesda job listing, 2024, fueling city-setting theories.
Building on Fallout 4’s settlement system, Fallout 5 is expected to deepen base building and resource management. The survival mode popularized by Fallout 4 and refined in Starfield will likely return as a core toggle, requiring players to manage hunger, thirst, sleep, and disease. The Creation Engine 2, used in Starfield, will enable improved graphics, physics, and ray tracing on next-gen consoles.
Bethesda has committed to robust mod support across its titles. Fallout 5 will almost certainly ship with official modding tools and cross-platform sharing, following the model of Skyrim and Fallout 4. Expect a focus on community-created content from launch.
