Noel Acciari's journey from undrafted college free agent to NHL veteran. Highlights include a 20-goal season with Florida and a new contract with Philadelphia.
Noel Acciari went undrafted after a standout college career at Providence College, where he helped the Friars win the 2015 NCAA championship. The Boston Bruins signed him as a free agent later that year, giving the 24-year-old his first shot at professional hockey. Acciari spent parts of three seasons in Boston, where his tenacious checking, penalty killing, and physical play carved out a reliable bottom-six role. By the time he was traded to the Florida Panthers in 2019, he had already established a reputation as a difficult player to play against.
Undrafted at age 24, Acciari has now played 585 NHL games — a testament to his durability and specialized skill set.
His early career numbers were modest: 10 goals in 2018-19 was his best before Florida. But teams valued his ability to kill penalties, win faceoffs, and absorb punishment in the defensive end. The trade to Florida set the stage for an unexpected offensive eruption.
In 66 games during the 2019-20 season, Acciari stunned the league by scoring 20 goals — more than double his previous career high of 10. He added just 7 assists for 27 points, but the goal total was a remarkable outlier for a player who had never been relied upon for offense. He averaged 14:09 of ice time per game, often playing alongside skilled linemates who capitalized on his puck retrieval and net-front presence.
Acciari's 20 goals in 2019-20 remain a career best, a season that redefined expectations for the defensive-minded forward.
The breakout was short-lived. Acciari would not crack double digits in goals again until the 2025-26 season with Pittsburgh. But that single campaign proved he could produce offense when given the opportunity, and it remains the defining statistical highlight of his career.
After stops in St. Louis and Toronto in 2022-23, Acciari signed a three-year deal with the Pittsburgh Penguins. His third season in Pittsburgh — 2025-26 — was his best since Florida. In 67 games, he scored 13 goals and 25 points while averaging 13:42 of ice time. At 5-on-5, the Penguins controlled 57.75 percent of goals and 51.83 percent of expected goals with him on the ice, underscoring his continued two-way value.
On July 1, 2026, Acciari signed a two-year, $2.8 million contract with the Philadelphia Flyers. The deal brings a veteran presence to a young Flyers team that defeated the Penguins in the first round of the 2026 playoffs. Acciari's physicality, penalty-killing acumen, and experience in high-leverage situations should solidify the Flyers' bottom six.
