Discover the best viewing spots for Seattle's July 4th fireworks, including Gas Works Park, Kerry Park, and quieter alternatives. Tips on timing, transit, and photography.
Gas Works Park, perched on the north shore of Lake Union, offers the most unobstructed view of the fireworks launch barges. The park opens at dawn and typically fills by early afternoon; visitors who arrive after 2 PM risk standing behind the tree line. Public transit (Routes 31 and 32) is the smartest way in, as road closures around the park start at 6 PM and parking is virtually nonexistent. Bring blankets, chairs, and a full picnic — food vendors are limited and lines can stretch 30 minutes. The grassy slopes face south, giving you a front-row seat to the 10:15 PM show. If you want to combine fireworks with a classic Seattle sunset over the water, this is your spot.
Kerry Park on Queen Anne Hill is the postcard view of Seattle: the Space Needle framed by the city skyline, with fireworks bursting overhead. Space is extremely limited — the park can hold maybe 200 people comfortably. Arrive by 6 PM to claim a spot, and expect standing room only. Photographers line the railing with tripods; a wide-angle lens and manual focus on the Space Needle before the show starts will yield the sharpest shots. Street parking on Queen Anne is scarce and metered until 8 PM. Ride-sharing or walking from Lower Queen Anne is recommended. The perspective here is slightly angled from the barge, but the iconic foreground makes it worth the squeeze.
“Kerry Park is the most photographed spot in the city for a reason. The fireworks layer over the skyline creates an image that’s uniquely Seattle.” — local photographer
If Kerry Park feels too cramped, nearby Bhy Kracke Park on Queen Anne offers elevated views with half the crowd. The park has a small playground and more grass for spreading out. On Capitol Hill, Volunteer Park provides a southeast perspective of the fireworks over Lake Union, with the Space Needle visible in the distance. These alternatives are family-friendly and often have more room for children to play. Free street parking is more available than in downtown areas, but arrive by 7 PM to avoid circling. Bring a flashlight for the walk back — the parks are dark after the show ends.
Whether you choose Gas Works Park for the full-frontal spectacle or a quieter hilltop perch, planning ahead is the difference between a memorable Fourth and a frustrating one.
