Newcastle United Forced into Complete Midfield Rebuild
Newcastle United are reportedly forced into a complete midfield rebuild this summer, per The Transfer Flow.
Brentford sign free agent Callum Wilson on a 12-month contract. He discusses complementing Igor Thiago and Keith Andrews' ambition.
Brentford have added Premier League experience to their forward line with the free transfer of former England striker Callum Wilson. The 34-year-old has signed a 12-month contract after leaving West Ham United, who were relegated from the top flight.
Wilson told club media he was grateful for the opportunity and that a conversation with Bees boss Keith Andrews about his ambition played a key role in his decision. He also praised Brentford's style and squad togetherness, noting that he liked the feel of the group from playing against them.
Wilson is relishing the chance to work with Igor Thiago, who scored 20 Premier League goals last season. “For me, it's about coming and sharing the load, helping out as a striking department,” Wilson said. “We're different strikers, but sometimes I'm guessing we'll play together. I'm here to push and compete.”
Manager Keith Andrews called Wilson a “really good signing” who has the “nous to score goals” and “experience around the training ground.” Wilson provides competition for Thiago, who the club insist is not for sale despite reported offers of £80m-£90m. Andrews also noted Wilson will help younger players like Kaye Furo.
Wilson has plenty of Premier League experience from spells at Bournemouth, Newcastle, and West Ham. Last season he scored seven goals in 35 appearances (12 starts). He also earned nine England caps between 2018 and 2023, scoring twice and featuring at the 2022 World Cup.
The move follows Jaidon Anthony's arrival from Burnley earlier this week. Elsewhere in the transfer market, Newcastle completed a £23m signing of Sean Steur from Ajax, while Kieron Bowie continues to be linked with Celtic.
