Christos Tzolis Arsenal Transfer: Deal Agreed for Greek Winger

Arsenal have verbally agreed a €40m deal for Christos Tzolis. Analysis of the Greek winger's fit as a Trossard replacement, his stats, and what it means for the squad.

Arsenal have moved quickly to fill the gap left by Leandro Trossard's departure, reaching a verbal agreement with Club Brugge for Greek winger Christos Tzolis. The deal, worth up to €40m (£34m), is a record fee for the Belgian Pro League and signals the club's intent to maintain depth in attack as they prepare for the new season.

According to multiple reports, the 24-year-old is expected to undergo a medical in the coming days and sign a long-term contract. While a formal bid has not yet been submitted, that is considered a formality, and personal terms are not expected to be an issue. Once Tzolis learned of Arsenal's interest, he was keen on the move.

Why Tzolis fits the Trossard profile

Tzolis is being brought in as a direct replacement for Trossard, who joined Besiktas this week for €18m (£15.3m). The similarities between the two players are striking. Like Trossard, Tzolis is primarily a left winger but is also comfortable operating as a No. 10. This positional flexibility was a key asset for Trossard during his time at the Emirates, allowing Mikel Arteta to rotate his front line without losing tactical shape.

Last season, Tzolis scored 17 goals and added 23 assists in 36 league appearances for Club Brugge, contributing to a total of 22 goals across all competitions. His overall record for the Belgian side stands at 43 goals in 108 appearances. Those numbers, combined with his ability to create chances from wide areas, make him a logical fit for a team that relies on fluid attacking movement.

Sky Sports analysis noted that Tzolis is a winger who, like Trossard, can also play as a No. 10. This versatility will be valuable for Arsenal, especially as they look to manage fixture congestion and maintain competition for places.

Scouting and deal structure

Sporting director Andrea Berta has been instrumental in the deal, with his assistant Maurizio Micheli scouting Tzolis during Greece's match against Sweden last month. The scouting report clearly aligned with what Arsenal were looking for: a player who can contribute immediately in the Premier League while still having room to develop.

The €40m fee represents a significant investment for a player who previously struggled to make an impact at Norwich City. However, his resurgence at Club Brugge — where he became one of the most productive wingers in European football — has convinced Arsenal that he is ready for a second chance in English football. Crystal Palace had also shown interest in Tzolis last summer as a potential replacement for Eberechi Eze, but Arsenal moved decisively once Trossard's departure was confirmed.

Separate from bigger targets

It is important to note that the Tzolis deal is independent of Arsenal's pursuit of a high-profile forward. The club retains a long-term interest in Atlético Madrid's Julián Álvarez, who remains the priority target, though Barcelona and Real Madrid are also interested. Morgan Rogers of Aston Villa is Arsenal's preferred option for a versatile forward, with the club's efforts set to accelerate once his participation in the World Cup with England is over. Aston Villa are thought to want more than £100m for Rogers. Paris Saint-Germain's Bradley Barcola is viewed as an alternative.

This suggests that Tzolis is not being signed as a marquee addition but rather as a smart, targeted replacement for a specific role in the squad. The club is still planning to bring in at least one more attacking reinforcement this summer, meaning the forward line could look significantly different by the time the transfer window closes.

Defensive concerns and squad balance

Beyond the attack, Arsenal are also seeking defensive cover due to concerns that William Saliba could miss the start of the season with a back issue. The France defender was taken off during the World Cup semi-final against Spain after breaking down early in the second half. The club is expected to step up efforts to sign a centre-back, with Aston Villa's Ezri Konsa among the potential targets.

Balancing the squad while pursuing multiple targets is a challenge, but the Tzolis deal shows that Arsenal are willing to act efficiently when the right opportunity arises. The record fee for a Belgian Pro League player reflects the club's confidence in his ability to adapt to Arteta's system.

What this means for Arsenal's attack

With Trossard gone, Arsenal lose a player who could unlock deep defences with his close control and intelligent movement. Tzolis offers a similar profile, but with more directness and a stronger goal threat from wide areas. His 17 league goals last season suggest he can provide the kind of output that Arsenal need from their wide players, especially in games where they dominate possession.

He also adds depth to a position where Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli are the established starters. Having a player who can cover both wings and the No. 10 role gives Arteta more tactical flexibility, particularly in the latter stages of matches when fresh legs can make the difference.

The transfer is not yet officially completed, but all signs point to Tzolis becoming an Arsenal player in the coming days. For a fee that represents a record for the Belgian league, the club is betting on a player who has already proven he can produce at a high level. Whether he can replicate that form in the Premier League remains to be seen, but the early indications are that Arsenal have found a suitable replacement for Trossard.
