D&D Warcraft: World of Warcraft Crossover Announced at Gen Con 2026

Wizards of the Coast announced D&D: World of Warcraft and Star Wars sets at Gen Con 2026. Release date, subclasses, bundles, and what it means for tabletop.

Games

At Gen Con 2026, Wizards of the Coast dropped a pair of announcements that will reshape the tabletop roleplaying landscape. During the keynote at the Indiana Repertory Theater, the company revealed the first two entries in its new Universes Beyond line for Dungeons & Dragons: one themed after World of Warcraft and one after Star Wars. The World of Warcraft book, titled D&D: World of Warcraft, is the first to get a full reveal, and it's a deep crossover that brings Azeroth to the tabletop.

D&D Warcraft: A New Crossover for Tabletop

Starting November 17, players will be able to "roll for Azeroth" as they recreate their World of Warcraft main character or roll a new alt. The book lets you explore beloved zones, delve through familiar dungeons, and face legendary foes from over 20 years of World of Warcraft history. That includes iconic villains like the Lich King and Ragnaros, who will be playable in D&D form.

The core rulebook is built to be compatible with D&D's D20 system, meaning you can use it in your own campaigns or any other setting that uses those rules. It includes six new subclasses and thirteen class skins, each building on the foundation of the Player's Handbook while layering on World of Warcraft flavor. Whether you want to play a Death Knight, a Demon Hunter, or a classic Paladin, the book gives you the tools to bring that class to the table.

From Desktop to Tabletop

Holly Longdale, executive producer and vice president of World of Warcraft, explained the creative focus behind the collaboration: "One of the lovely things about D&D is it comes alive with your imagination, and to be able to take some of the world of Azeroth and World of Warcraft and allow players to create their adventures based on a world they've loved and known — or maybe they're just getting introduced to through D&D — that was the focus."

That sentiment captures the appeal of the crossover. For longtime WoW players, it's a chance to revisit familiar places with a new set of rules. For tabletop newcomers, it's an entry point into a universe they may have only experienced through a screen. The book is designed to hand players and Dungeon Masters everything they need to set their next great campaign, from choosing a faction to building a champion.

Pre-Order Bonuses and the Collector's Edition

Pre-orders are live now, and they come with a twist: physical books and digital extras, plus in-game World of Warcraft items. The standard pre-purchase bundles include the Black Dragon Mount, Gazer pet, Mimic Chest toy, and Mimic Chest decor — a nice incentive for MMO players who also want to roll dice.

For collectors, the Collector's Edition Ultimate Bundle is the rarest drop. It includes a limited-edition Collector's Edition in a foil-and-sculpted slipcase, the Icecrown Citadel Map Pack and Digital Adventure, a Dungeon Master's Screen, and a guaranteed Murloc Promo Mini. All of that comes in physical and digital formats, plus additional digital pre-order rewards, including a code for World of Warcraft in-game items.

The Universes Beyond Line

These two partnerships are the first in the new Universes Beyond line, which follows the same concept as the identically named series from Magic: The Gathering. The idea is to fold creative universes from other companies into D&D, expanding the game beyond its own fantasy setting. The Star Wars book was announced with fewer details, but the fact that it's coming at all is a signal that Wizards of the Coast is serious about making D&D a universal system.

The announcement was made on the opening night of Gen Con, the massive annual tabletop gaming convention in Indianapolis. The D&D team unveiled a series of books and products that can be preordered now and will debut on store shelves in the fourth quarter of 2026. That timeline puts D&D: World of Warcraft in players' hands just in time for the holiday season.

What This Means for Both Franchises

For World of Warcraft, this is a chance to reach a tabletop audience that may not have touched the MMO. For D&D, it's a way to bring in new players who are already invested in Azeroth's lore. The crossover is a natural fit: both are built on fantasy tropes, both reward deep knowledge of their worlds, and both thrive on player choice.

The Star Wars announcement, teased with the arrival of "Lord Vader" at Gen Con, suggests that Wizards of the Coast is planning a broader strategy. If the World of Warcraft book sells well, we could see more licensed settings in the future. For now, players have a clear date to mark on their calendars: November 17, with early access beginning November 3.

Whether you're a veteran Dungeon Master or a WoW player curious about tabletop, D&D: World of Warcraft looks like it will deliver on its promise. The book is designed to let you recreate your main, roll a new alt, or play a hero the world has never seen. Azeroth is calling, and this time, the story is yours to tell.
