Duluth police closed West 1st Street for hours after a 59-year-old man barricaded himself in a storage unit. He surrendered peacefully after negotiations with SWAT and crisis team.
A tense Wednesday morning in downtown Duluth ended peacefully when a 59-year-old man surrendered to police after barricading himself inside a storage unit. The incident shut down a section of West 1st Street for several hours and drew a coordinated response from the Duluth Police Department's Crisis Negotiations Team and SWAT unit.
Police responded to the 100 block of West 1st Street around 9:40 a.m. after receiving a report of a man with a gun. According to authorities, a moving company hired by a landlord to remove the suspect's belongings was threatened by the suspect with a firearm. The movers fled the scene, and the suspect then barricaded himself inside the storage unit located in the alley between Superior Street and First Street, between First and Second avenues west.
The Duluth Police Department's Crisis Negotiations Team and SWAT were called to the scene to work toward a peaceful resolution. The surrounding area was closed to traffic for several hours as officers established a perimeter and began negotiations. The suspect surrendered peacefully around 1:05 p.m., according to police on scene. No injuries were reported during the incident.
The man was arrested and taken to the St. Louis County Jail, where he is expected to be charged with second-degree assault and threats of violence. The Duluth News Tribune noted that it generally does not identify suspects until they have been formally charged, and police have not released the suspect's name pending charges.
For residents and commuters, the closure of the 100 block of West 1st Street caused temporary disruptions, but police urged the public to avoid the area and find alternative routes. The swift and coordinated response by the Crisis Negotiations Team and SWAT ensured the situation was resolved without violence.
This incident serves as a reminder of the critical role that specialized police units play in de-escalating potentially dangerous situations. The peaceful surrender underscores the effectiveness of negotiation tactics in resolving barricade incidents without harm to the suspect or the public.
As the investigation continues and charges are filed, the community can reflect on the professionalism displayed by the Duluth Police Department. For now, the immediate danger has passed, and the area has reopened to normal traffic. The suspect remains in custody at the St. Louis County Jail, awaiting formal charges.
