It is the first to feature 48 nations, the first hosted across three countries (the United States, Mexico, and Canada), and the first World Cup held in the United States since 1994. The tournament began on June 11, 2026, and after a month of group-stage drama, shock eliminations, and record-breaking debutants, the tournament has narrowed down to its final four teams.

Knockout Round and Semifinals

The 2026 FIFA World Cup has reached the semifinals with both matchups now set following the conclusion of the quarterfinals. Reigning champions Argentina will take on England in Atlanta, while France will face Spain in Dallas. The three tournament co-hosts were each knocked out in the Round of 16 after Canada lost to Morocco, Mexico fell to England and the USMNT was eliminated by Belgium.

A record eight Arab nations, four World Cup debutants, and seven former champions were among the 48 teams that qualified for North America. Below is the complete list, organized by the region each team qualified through.

Spain, France, England, Portugal, Germany, Belgium, Croatia, Netherlands, Norway, Switzerland, Austria, Scotland, Sweden, Turkiye, Bosnia and Herzegovina. Italy did not qualify, missing a third consecutive World Cup after a playoff defeat.

Cape Verde, Curacao, Jordan, and Uzbekistan all reached their first-ever FIFA World Cup finals. Curacao, with a population of roughly 158,000, became the smallest nation ever to qualify. Iraq's qualifying campaign was the longest in history, spanning 21 matches over 28 months.
