John Stones Transfer to Inter Milan: Football Transfer News

John Stones is in advanced talks to join Inter Milan on a free transfer. Get the latest football transfer news on the England defender's move.

Sports

John Stones, the 32-year-old England defender, is in advanced talks to join Inter Milan on a free transfer after leaving Manchester City at the end of June. The Serie A champions are leading the race to sign him on a two-year contract, having held positive discussions with the centre-half. Stones has verbally agreed to the move, with his representatives set to finalise terms. The transfer is expected to be completed by the end of the week, according to multiple reports.

Stones made 295 appearances for City after joining from Everton for £47.5m in 2016. He helped City win six Premier League titles, the Champions League, two FA Cups, five League Cups, three Community Shields, the Club World Cup and the Uefa Super Cup. The former Barnsley defender has won 93 international caps and was part of the England squad who finished third at the World Cup.

Inter's Defensive Plans

Inter are also interested in Tottenham's Cristian Romero, who is head coach Christian Chivu's top defensive target. However, the cost of a deal for Romero is expected to be significant. There is potential for Inter to sign both players if Benjamin Pavard leaves, but as things stand, Stones is the priority. The move would see Stones link-up with former Manchester City team-mate Manuel Akanji, who has joined Inter on a permanent basis following a season-long loan deal in 2025-26.

Inter were crowned Italian champions for the 21st time in 2025-26 under Chivu, having reached the Champions League final the previous year in which they were defeated 5-0 by Paris Saint-Germain. The Italian champions have also signed Serbia international midfielder Aleksandar Stankovic from Club Brugge and goalkeeper Ivan Provedel from Lazio this summer.

Interest from Premier League Clubs

Stones also has interest from Arsenal and Chelsea in the Premier League. Inter were aware of the significant interest and worked to close a deal for the 32-year-old. City announced in April that Stones would leave the club upon the expiry of his contract this summer after 10 successful years. The Athletic reported at the time that it was anticipated a number of top clubs across Europe would be interested in a summer move for the defender.

For fans following football transfer news, this move represents a significant addition to Inter's defence as they look to defend their Serie A title and compete in the Champions League.
