Nashville Weather This Week: Storms and Flood Risk Through Weekend

Nashville weather will be active this week as a slow-moving frontal system brings multiple rounds of heavy rain and thunderstorms through Saturday. The primary concern is flash flooding, especially Friday as storm coverage increases. Here's a day-by-day breakdown of what to expect.

Thursday: Scattered Storms, Localized Heavy Rain

Thursday mirrors Wednesday's setup. Heat and humidity will fuel scattered showers and thunderstorms during the day. While not everyone will see rain, any storm that develops can produce very heavy rainfall in a short time, leading to localized flash flooding. Highs will reach the low 80s. After midnight, expect mostly cloudy skies with patchy fog and lows in the mid 60s.

Friday: Highest Flood Threat of the Week

The risk escalates significantly Friday as a cold front slowly approaches from the northwest. Storm coverage will be high, and the atmosphere will be primed for heavy downpours. According to forecasters, Friday sees our risk for showers and thunderstorms increase quite a bit. Storms will be capable of producing localized heavy rainfall, which could lead to flash flooding. As a result of the numerous storms expected, high temperature will dip back to around 80 degrees.

Saturday: Front Stalls, More Rain

The front stalls near the area Saturday, keeping the region wet. Scattered thunderstorms are likely, with the potential for heavy rainfall again. Highs will be in the upper 70s to around 80 degrees.

Sunday and Monday: Drying Out, Warming Up

High pressure begins to nudge in from the north Sunday. Expect plenty of sunshine with only a stray isolated mountain shower possible. Humidity drops noticeably, making it feel more comfortable. Highs will be near 80. Monday brings even more sun and warmer conditions: high temperatures will climb into the mid 80s with low humidity.

Flash Flood Safety Tips

With the heightened flood risk Friday and lingering through Saturday, residents should take precautions:

  • Never drive through flooded roadways. Turn around, don't drown. Just six inches of moving water can knock a person down, and one foot can sweep a vehicle away.
  • Stay informed. Monitor local weather alerts and have multiple ways to receive warnings (phone apps, NOAA weather radio).
  • Have an emergency kit ready. Include flashlights, batteries, first-aid supplies, and essential medications.
  • Avoid low-lying areas. If you live in a flood-prone zone, consider moving to higher ground ahead of heavy rain.

Extended Outlook

Looking ahead, the front exits Sunday, and high pressure builds in. That means a drying trend with plenty of sunshine and highs returning to the mid 80s by Monday. After a soggy few days, next week looks much calmer.

Stay safe and stay dry, Nashville.
