Project Sunrise: A350-1000ULR Completes First Test Flight for World's Longest Nonstop Route

Qantas' Project Sunrise takes a major step as the A350-1000ULR completes its first nonstop test flight from Toulouse to Melbourne. Here's what it means for ultra-long-haul aviation.

On a quiet Melbourne tarmac, a new Airbus A350-1000ULR is cooling its jets after a flight that pushed the boundaries of commercial aviation. And it has to do it all over again on Monday.

This is not just another test flight. It is a validation of the engineering required to operate the world's longest non-stop commercial flight — a route from Sydney to London that Qantas expects to launch in October 2027. The scheduled routes could stretch up to 22 hours and cover more than 10,000 miles.

The Fuel Tank That Makes It Possible

The A350-1000ULR's most visible modification is an extra 20,000-liter fuel tank. That additional capacity holds the juice to keep the aircraft in the air for nearly a full day. For context, a standard A350-1000 already carries enough fuel for flights of 15 to 17 hours. The ULR variant essentially adds a second fuel system, with all the weight, balance, and safety implications that entails.

A crew of four Airbus flight test pilots and five flight test engineers put the aircraft's systems through their paces on the flight from Toulouse. They tested fuel management, engine performance at extreme durations, and the aircraft's ability to maintain pressurization and cabin conditions over a period that exceeds most people's waking day.

What Ultra-Long-Haul Means for Operations

Operating a flight of 22 hours is not simply a matter of adding fuel and flying east. The aircraft must carry enough reserve fuel for diversions, hold patterns, and alternate airports. On a route like Sydney to London, the diversion options are limited. The aircraft must also manage crew rest — a factor that becomes critical when the flight time exceeds 19 hours.

Qantas has been studying ultra-long-haul operations for years, including research flights with Boeing 787 Dreamliners on routes like Perth to London. But the A350-1000ULR represents a step change in capability. The aircraft is designed to carry a full passenger load over distances that were previously the domain of cargo or specialized charter flights.

CNN's Richard Quest took a look inside the ultra-long-range plane last month, offering a preview of the cabin and systems that will eventually carry passengers on the world's longest scheduled flight.

Engineering Challenges at the Edge

The test flight from Toulouse to Melbourne is a key milestone in validating the aircraft's systems for ultra-long-haul operations. But the real test will come when the aircraft begins flying the Sydney-London route. That flight will cross multiple time zones, weather systems, and air traffic control regions. The aircraft must be able to communicate with ground stations across the Indian Ocean, where satellite coverage can be spotty.

The extra fuel tank also changes the aircraft's center of gravity, which affects handling characteristics. The test pilots will have spent hours evaluating the aircraft's behavior at different fuel loads, from full tanks at takeoff to near-empty tanks at landing. The five flight test engineers on board monitored thousands of data points, looking for anomalies that could indicate a problem.

For passengers, the experience will be unlike any other commercial flight. The cabin will need to accommodate sleep, meals, and entertainment for a period that exceeds 20 hours. Qantas has not yet revealed the cabin configuration for the A350-1000ULR, but the airline has indicated it will include dedicated rest areas and enhanced air filtration to reduce jet lag.

What This Means for Aviation

Project Sunrise is not just about one route. If successful, it could open up new possibilities for airlines to connect cities that were previously too far apart for non-stop service. Routes like London to Perth, New York to Singapore, or Los Angeles to Dubai are already being flown with ultra-long-haul aircraft. But the A350-1000ULR extends the range even further, potentially connecting cities like London to Sydney or New York to Jakarta without a stop.

The economics of these flights remain unproven. Ultra-long-haul flights require more fuel per passenger, which increases costs. But they also eliminate the need for a stopover, which can save time and reduce the hassle of connecting flights. For business travelers, the ability to fly non-stop from Sydney to London could be a significant advantage.

The test flight from Toulouse to Melbourne is a reminder that aviation is still pushing boundaries. The A350-1000ULR is not just a longer-range version of an existing aircraft. It is a purpose-built machine designed to solve the engineering challenges of flying for nearly a full day. And if the test flights continue to go well, passengers will soon be able to experience the world's longest flight for themselves.

For now, the aircraft sits in Melbourne, preparing for its next test. The crew will rest, the engineers will analyze data, and the aircraft will fly again. Project Sunrise is one step closer to reality.
