Rangers are leading the race for Sturm Graz midfielder Ryan Fosso with direct talks ongoing. Competitors include Levante and Torino. Tactical profile inside.
Rangers have opened direct negotiations to sign Sturm Graz defensive midfielder Ryan Fosso, according to Sky Sports Switzerland. The Ibrox club are described as the team “furthest along” in the race for the 24-year-old Cameroon international, who has caught the eye of several European clubs.
The interest in Fosso is intense. La Liga side Levante have already tabled an opening contract proposal, while Serie A clubs Torino and an unnamed Italian outfit are also making enquiries. Rangers’ proactive approach, however, puts them in pole position.
Fosso, born in Lugano, began his career at Swiss side Young Boys before moving to Vaduz. He spent two years in Liechtenstein and then joined Fortuna Sittard on a free transfer. His performances in the Eredivisie impressed Sturm Graz enough to pay £900,000 to bring him to Austria in January 2026. He has a long-term contract in Graz, meaning Rangers will need to negotiate a substantial fee to secure his release.
The midfielder earned his first senior cap for Cameroon in March 2026, adding international pedigree to his profile.
Fosso is primarily a defensive midfielder, but he is far from a one-dimensional ball-winner. He combines impeccable game-reading with controlled aggression in defensive duels, acting as a natural structural screen to extinguish attacks. Crucially, he also possesses the vertical passing and dribbling ability to break through pressing lines under pressure. That rare blend of defensive solidity and progressive ball-carrying makes him an asset for modern tactical systems.
The timing of Rangers’ move for Fosso is significant. The club is also reportedly looking to strengthen midfield, and with Nicolas Raskin potentially leaving after his World Cup campaign, Fosso could be a direct replacement.
Rangers’ aggressive move to negotiate directly with Fosso’s representatives demonstrates their determination to land one of Europe’s most in-demand defensive midfielders. With competition from Spain and Italy, the next days will be crucial in determining whether the Ibrox club can complete a deal.
