Ten people are hurt after a Tucson shooting involving police in downtown Tucson early Sunday morning, according to authorities. The incident unfolded around 2 a.m. near 6th Avenue and Congress Street, leaving nine victims and a male suspect with critical gunshot wounds.
Officers responding to reports of shots fired encountered a male suspect fleeing the scene. A uniformed officer fired his department-issued firearm, striking the suspect. The suspect was taken into custody, given first aid at the scene by officers, and then transported by Tucson Fire crews to a hospital in critical condition. Nine other individuals suffered critical gunshot wounds to their arms or legs. No officers were injured.
The Pima County Sheriff’s Department is leading the criminal investigation through the Pima Regional Critical Incident Team (PRCIT). The Tucson Police Department is conducting a separate, parallel internal review to determine if any department policies were violated. As is standard practice in all officer-involved shootings, findings from both investigations will be forwarded to the Pima County Attorney’s Office for review.
Road closures remain in effect. 6th Avenue is closed between Pennington Street and Broadway Boulevard, and Congress Street is closed between Scott and Toole avenues. Drivers are urged to avoid the area.
Authorities are asking anyone with information or video of the incident to call 88-CRIME and reference Pima County Sheriff’s Department case number 260719048. Tips can be submitted anonymously.
This is the 10th officer-involved shooting in the Tucson area reported this year and the 52nd statewide, according to Arizona’s Family. The incident follows two officer-involved shootings reported Saturday in the Valley, including one involving Chandler police at a Tempe apartment complex and another involving Mesa police and a homicide suspect.
