iOS 27: iPhone Messages Gets Major Overhaul with Siri AI Features

Apple's iOS 27, announced at WWDC in June 2026, is set to deliver the most significant update to the iPhone Messages app in years. While the final release won't arrive until September, users can already test the new features through Apple's Beta Software Program. The overhaul is powered by Siri AI, an expanded version of the assistant that relies on Apple Intelligence, Apple's AI software platform.

Here's what's changing and how these iOS 27 features aim to reduce friction in everyday messaging.

AI-Powered Message Previews

One of the most immediately useful additions is AI-generated previews for lengthy text messages. Instead of scrolling through a wall of text, Siri AI will surface a concise summary, letting you grasp the gist without reading every line. This feature is designed for group chats, long threads, or forwarded articles where the key point can get buried.

One-Tap Suggestions

iOS 27 introduces a set of contextual one-tap suggestions that appear directly within a conversation. Powered by Siri AI, these suggestions let you act on information without switching apps. According to Apple, users can, from a text chain:

  • Call a person mentioned in a text message
  • Create an event in the Calendar app based on discussed plans
  • Create a note in the Notes app based on a message
  • Send an email through the Mail app
  • Save a shared photo
  • Take and send a photo

These suggestions may appear right under the relevant text message or at the top of the keyboard when typing a reply. For example, if a friend texts "Let's grab coffee at 3 PM on Friday," a one-tap option could add that event directly to your Calendar. The goal is to eliminate the copy-paste dance that often interrupts a conversation.

Siri Can Draft Messages in Your Voice

Perhaps the most personal new capability is Siri AI's ability to draft text messages in a user's voice based on previous correspondence with a recipient. Sebastien Marineau-Mes, Apple vice president of software engineering, explained during WWDC that the system learns your typical phrasing and tone from past conversations, then generates drafts that sound like you. This goes beyond generic auto-complete—it aims to capture your unique style, whether that's formal, casual, or somewhere in between.

Turning Off Speech-to-Text

For users who prefer typing over dictation, iOS 27 adds the ability to turn off speech-to-text entirely. This is a straightforward but welcome control for those who find the microphone icon intrusive or who never use voice input.

Broader Apple Intelligence Updates

The Messages overhaul is just one part of Apple's broader push into AI. The same Siri AI engine is also driving updates across the ecosystem. On the Mac, macOS 27 Golden Gate public beta 2 includes fixes and tweaks to Liquid Glass, improvements to system search, design changes to Apple Intelligence, a new set of writing tools, and improved Visual Intelligence. The beta also introduces a tool for users to create custom Safari extensions and new Shortcuts using natural language with AI.

These updates signal that Apple is treating AI as a system-level capability, not a standalone app. The same intelligence that summarizes a text message can also help you build a Safari extension or automate a workflow.

What This Means for Users

The Messages changes in iOS 27 are less about flashy new interfaces and more about reducing cognitive load. AI previews save time scanning long threads. One-tap suggestions cut down on app switching. Voice drafting preserves your personal style while speeding up replies. And the option to disable speech-to-text gives users control over their input method.

For those who rely on Messages for work coordination, the Calendar and email integrations could be particularly valuable. For heavy group chat participants, the preview feature might be the standout. And for anyone who has ever wished Siri would just write the way they do, the voice-drafting feature is a long-awaited step forward.

As with any beta software, early adopters should expect some rough edges. The Siri AI features are still in testing, and performance may vary. But the direction is clear: Apple is betting that AI can make messaging feel less like a chore and more like a natural conversation.

iOS 27 is expected to ship to all users in September 2026. Until then, the public beta offers a preview of how Apple Intelligence will reshape the iPhone's most-used app.
